This really cheeses me off. No academic library is going to sink $10k on this, so scholars will have very little access to these texts. The Vatican is just pandering to the whole Da Vinci Code conspiracy crew, or at least the affluent component thereof.
I guess I’m surprised that the Vatican would be in it for the money, but it’s as good an answer as any. 300 X $8000 is a cool quarter million. Maybe they owe the publisher a favor.
Do schools ever go in together to get one of these kinds of things?
